World Poultry Day: Celebrating Our Feathered Friends (and the Flavours They Bring!) by Shenequa Williams
Celebrated annually on May 10, World Poultry Day gives us a reason to ruffle some feathers, in the best way possible! It’s a time to appreciate the role poultry plays in our daily lives, from the eggs on our breakfast plates to the hearty chicken dishes we enjoy with family and friends.
Poultry farming is one of the most accessible and impactful areas of agriculture worldwide. Chickens, ducks, and other birds are not just sources of food, they’re also vital for livelihoods, especially in small island states like Antigua and Barbuda. Here at home, poultry farming contributes to food security, helps reduce reliance on imports, and supports local farmers and entrepreneurs.
Across Antigua and Barbuda, poultry farmers, both large-scale producers and backyard keepers, work hard to ensure a steady supply of fresh eggs and meat. Local initiatives continue to encourage more people, especially young farmers, to get involved in poultry production. With the right care, a few chicks can quickly grow into a productive flock, proving that sometimes, small beginnings lead to egg-cellent results!
Beyond economics, poultry also plays a role in sustainability. Chickens, for example, help control pests and can contribute to organic farming systems through natural fertilization. It’s a win-win for farmers and the environment.
World Poultry Day is also a great reminder to support local producers. Choosing locally raised poultry not only boosts the economy but also ensures fresher, high-quality products on your table.
So, whether you’re enjoying a classic chicken dish, collecting eggs from your backyard coop, or simply learning more about agriculture, take a moment on May 10 to appreciate these hardworking birds.
