KNOW THE FACTS.. What is SILAGE?

Sillage high-moisture green forage such as grass, maize, or sorghum that has been preserved through anaerobic oxygen-free fermentation.
How Silage Works
• Harvesting: Green crops are cut and chopped into small pieces while still moist.
• Compaction: The chopped plant material is packed tightly into silos, bunkers, piles, or wrapped in plastic bales to remove air.
• Fermentation: Natural lactic acid bacteria consume plant sugars and produce acids. This drops the pH level, stops spoilage microorganisms, and locks in the crop’s nutrients for months or even years.
Common Crops Used
• Cereals and Grasses: Maize corn, sorghum, rye, oats, and perennial pasture grasses.
• Legumes: Alfalfa and clover often mixed with grasses.
Benefits in Livestock Farming
• Nutrient Retention: Retains much higher feed and protein value compared to traditional dried hay.
• Year-Round Supply: Provides a reliable, energy-rich feed source during winter or dry seasons when fresh grass is scarce.
• Animal Palatability: The sour, fermented taste and juicy texture are easily digested by ruminants like cattle and sheep, supporting better milk and meat production.
