World Food Day National Fertilizers & Seedlings Distribution Drive by Brea’ Watkins

Friday, 16th October 2026
The Agricultural Extension Division (AED) hosted its National Seedlings Distribution Drive on Friday, 16th October 2026, bringing together students, teachers, farmers, agricultural organisations and members of the public to celebrate agriculture and promote local food production in Antigua and Barbuda.
A major highlight of the event was the donation of more than 30,000 seedlings by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, through the Extension Division within the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and the Blue Economy. The initiative demonstrated the importance of supporting farmers, encouraging home gardening and increasing the production of locally grown food.
The event attracted representatives from several educational institutions, including Irene B. Williams Secondary School, Antigua Girls’ High School, Divine Academy, Kids Unlimited and Seventh-day Adventist school. Several other preschools, primary and secondary schools, both government and private, were also represented. Their participation highlighted the importance of introducing students to agriculture and encouraging an appreciation for farming from an early age.
The grounds were lively with activity as visitors eagerly roamed from stall to stall, receiving giveaways, exploring displays and purchasing a variety of products. Available items included seedlings, plants, fresh fruits, jams and other locally produced goods. The fair provided an opportunity for local producers and agro-processors to showcase their products while encouraging the public to support the local agricultural industry.
The Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) was among the organizations represented, showcasing different types of potatoes, giving visitors an opportunity to learn about crop varieties and the role of agricultural research in improving food production. The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) also participated, displaying agricultural products and contributing to the promotion of local produce and agro-processing.
The event also placed emphasis on the importance of supporting the farming community. The Honourable Anthony Smith, Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and the Blue Economy, encouraged farmers to become registered, highlighting the importance of formal registration in strengthening their connection with the agricultural sector and helping the government better identify and support their needs.
Minister Smith also underscored the Government’s commitment to implementing policies aimed at improving food prices and making food more affordable for consumers. These efforts form part of the wider goal of strengthening local agricultural production, supporting farmers and improving food security in Antigua and Barbuda.
In recognition of the contribution made by local farmers, farmers were recognized and presented with $250 gift vouchers and T-shirts. The vouchers can be redeemed exclusively at the CMC Farmers’ Store, allowing recipients to obtain items available at the store to support their farming activities. The gesture acknowledged their participation and contribution to the agricultural sector and highlighted the importance of recognizing those who work to supply the nation with fresh, locally produced food.
The participation of schools, agricultural institutions, farmers and government representatives demonstrated the value of collaboration in developing the agricultural industry. For students, the fair offered an opportunity to see agricultural products and practices firsthand while learning about possible careers and the importance of sustainable farming.
The distribution of fertilizers donated by the Kingdom of Morocco and more than 30,000 seedlings also encouraged individuals, schools and communities to establish gardens and increase their involvement in food production. With greater participation in gardening and farming, such initiatives can help strengthen the nation’s food supply and encourage a culture of growing and consuming local produce.
Overall, the Agricultural Extension Division’s National Fertilizers and Seedlings Distribution Drive served as an important platform for promoting agriculture, supporting farmers, showcasing local products and encouraging greater public involvement in food production. Through the distribution of seedlings, educational displays and recognition of farmers, the event highlighted the shared responsibility of government, agricultural organizations, schools and the wider community in building a stronger and more sustainable agricultural sector for Antigua and Barbuda.
