Interns Gain Maritime Experience at the Antigua Fisheries Dock by J’Naye Charles

The Ministry of Agriculture’s internship programme recently visited the Antigua Fisheries Dock and further waters, where the interns had the opportunity to learn more about the important work of the Antigua and Barbuda Coast Guard. During the visit, some of the interns participated in a fishing activity, while others had the opportunity to go aboard a Coast Guard vessel. On the vessel were Mr.Benjamin, Mr. Davis, and Nigel Simon Jr., who educated the interns about the duties and responsibilities of the Coast Guard.

During the experience, the interns learned that the Coast Guard serves as an emergency department on the water, responding to emergencies and helping to keep people safe at sea. They are also responsible for protecting up to 200 nautical miles of water surrounding Antigua, while ensuring that vessels entering these waters have the necessary permission. Another important skill they highlighted was the ability to read and understand maps, which is essential for navigating the waters and carrying out their duties effectively.

One interesting fact the interns learned was that at a certain point in Antigua’s waters, there is a steep drop-off where the depth of the water changes significantly. This was interesting because it showed them how important it is for Coast Guard officers to have a good understanding of the waters around Antigua. The visit also allowed the interns to experience how alert and prepared Coast Guard officers have to be while on duty. They must always be aware of their surroundings, follow safety procedures, and be prepared to respond to different emergencies that may occur on the water.

At the end of the day, the interns had the opportunity to experience the speed and agility of the Coast Guard vessel. While some of the interns enjoyed the experience, others became seasick, but overall, it was a fun, exciting, and educational day. The visit gave the interns a greater appreciation for the important role of the Coast Guard in protecting Antigua and Barbuda’s waters and keeping people safe, while also allowing them to gain knowledge and experience outside of the classroom.
