Interns Gain Farming Experience at Kaidana Farm by Shenequa Williams

The Ministry of Agriculture’s internship programme recently visited Kaidana Farm, owned and operated by Mr. Konata Lee, who has been farming for the past three years.

During the visit, Mr. Lee shared valuable insights on the importance of agriculture, encouraging the interns to view farming as a viable business that contributes to food security, reduces food imports, and creates employment opportunities. He emphasized the need to understand soil health, crop rotation, water management, and sustainable farming practices while highlighting the importance of protecting the environment by avoiding the introduction of invasive species.

The interns toured the farm, where they observed a wide variety of fruit trees and crops, including grafted soursop trees, coconuts, cherries, sweet potatoes, watermelons, citrus, pomegranates, and other tropical fruits. Mr. Lee also explained his plans to expand the farm with a hydroponic system to help overcome the challenges of drought and improve crop production.

As part of the hands-on experience, the interns assisted with watering plants and crops and pulling weeds around the farm, gaining a better appreciation for the dedication and hard work required to maintain a successful agricultural operation.

The educational visit concluded on a refreshing note as the interns enjoyed fresh watermelon harvested from the farm. They were also treated to ice cream from Ounces Ice Cream Parlor & Grill, courtesy of Mr. Konata Lee and Internship Coordinator Ms. Carol-Faye Bynoe-George, bringing an enjoyable end to an informative and rewarding day.
