MOA Interns Participate in a Beach Clean-Up and Sports Day with the Department of Blue Economy by Tyreke G Thomas-Horsford
The Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and the Blue Economy interns today participated in a meaningful beach clean-up and sports day activity at Pensioners Beach to conclude the series of activities for World Ocean month. This activity was hosted by the Department of Blue Economy in collaboration with Adopt A Coastline, Antigua and Barbuda Football Association and the Antigua and Barbuda Volleyball Association.
The activity formed part of the interns’ exposure to environmental stewardship, marine conservation, and the importance of protecting Antigua and Barbuda’s coastal and marine ecosystems. Working alongside the Adopt a Coastline team, the interns assisted in removing waste and debris from the beach, helping to restore the area and promote a cleaner, healthier environment for residents and visitors.
The clean-up also gave the interns a greater appreciation for the role that coastlines play in supporting marine life, tourism, fishing, recreation, and overall the Blue Economy. It served as a practical reminder that protecting the environment requires teamwork, responsibility, and consistent community action.
Following the clean-up exercise, the interns participated in a fun and engaging social session that included games such as football, volleyball, lime-and-spoon race, tug-of-war, and sack race. The interns were divided into four groups, and each team brought great energy, teamwork, and friendly competition to the activities.
At the end of the games and clean up session, Seven Sparks led with 24 points, followed by ATGO with 22 points. Dynamic Seven earned 10 points, while Team Grow received 7 points. The friendly competition helped to strengthen team spirit and allowed the interns to enjoy fellowship after completing their service activity.
The day was both educational and enjoyable, combining service, learning, and fellowship. Through this initiative, the interns demonstrated their commitment to community development and environmental care, while gaining valuable knowledge on the work of the Department of Blue Economy.
The Ministry continues to encourage young people to play an active role in protecting the nation’s natural resources and supporting sustainable development across Antigua and Barbuda.
