World Food Safety Day 2026: Safe Food, Healthy Lives by Shenequa Williams
Every day, we make decisions about the food we buy, prepare, and consume. While these choices may seem routine, they play an important role in protecting our health. This is why we join the global community in observing World Food Safety Day on June 7.Established by the United Nations in 2018 and first observed in 2019, World Food Safety Day raises awareness and encourages action to prevent foodborne illnesses. The 2026 theme, “From burden to solutions – safe food everywhere,” highlights the importance of using science and evidence to better understand food safety risks and develop practical solutions.
Foodborne diseases affect an estimated 600 million people worldwide each year and can result from contamination by bacteria, viruses, parasites, toxins, or harmful chemicals. Preventing these illnesses requires vigilance at every stage of the food chain.
In Antigua and Barbuda, food safety remains a national priority. As a country that relies on agriculture, fisheries, food imports, tourism, and food services, maintaining high food safety standards helps protect public health, strengthen our economy, and build consumer confidence.
Safe food is a shared responsibility. Farmers, fishers, food processors, vendors, inspectors, and consumers all have a role to play. Simple actions such as washing hands, separating raw and cooked foods, cooking food thoroughly, and storing food at safe temperatures can significantly reduce the risk of illness.
As we observe World Food Safety Day 2026, let us reaffirm our commitment to ensuring safe food for everyone. By working together and following safe food practices, we can protect our communities, support healthy lives, and build a safer food system for all.
Food Safety is Everyone’s Business.
