More on Antiguan Farmers visit to China by Bakesha Francis-James
A group of five farmers and associates says a special “Thank you” to the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, Anhui University of Agriculture in China and the Peoples Republic of China on what they described as a meaningful Agricultural trip to China from 22nd August to 4th September, 2025.
Former Senator – Bakesha Francis-James lead the group to this Seminar. Participants from Antigua that represented with her were: Nijah St. Rose, Rexford ‘Rexy’ Rhodes, Sylvinita Charles and Denisha Jeremy.
The Seminar on Demonstration and Promotion of new Vegetable Varieties and Cultivation Technologies was an eye opener for all the participants.
Additional Countries include: Barbados, China, Egypt, El Salvador, Gambia, Lesotho, Palestine, Pakistani, South Africa, Turkey and Uzbekistan.
The team visited quite a few Agricultural sites and farms such as WINALL Hi-Tech seed company Ltd. In Hefei China which is the 2nd largest seed company in the world with over 23 years experience.
They service over 150 countries with seeds, fruits and vegetables. Their main focus are as follows:
1. Seed production
2. Extension of Agricultural services all over the world
3. Exploration and Innovation of Agricultural Diversification.
The group also visited the Chinese Medicine Clinic at Anhui University of Chinese Medicine.
And
The ‘Liu Yipen Organic Vegetable Planting Base’ in Dayang Town, Luyang District to name a few.
Agricultural Lectures attended included:
- Team building
- General overview of China and their Agricultural Practices.
- Adherence to people centered development philosophies.
- Diagnosis and Management of Vegetable Diseases.
- Aquatic Vegetable Cultivation Techniques.
- Application of Molecular Markers in Vegetable Breeding.
The team were taken to a number of historic locations such as:
- The Great Wall
- The Birds Nest
- The Temple of Heaven
The team leader says the trip was a boost in their interest to assist others in improving Agriculture in our twin island state and to also assist with food security.
The organizing team in Antigua and also in China did an excellent job in ensuring that our trip was a memorable and productive one!
