More Than Farming!!My Journey with the Ministry of Agriculture by Keairra Smith

During my time with the Ministry of Agriculture, I was able to experience more than just the surface and outside world of agriculture. I gained insight into how the industry operates from within, and this opened my eyes to the important role agriculture plays in our country. The experience taught me more than I expected, and it has inspired me to consider agriculture as part of my future, especially in connection to the culinary industry I have hopes of stepping into.
One of the biggest lessons I learned was how deeply agriculture is rooted in Antigua. There are far more farmers than I imagined, and through this journey, I explored more of my island than I had in the last 16 years. It gave me a new appreciation for the beauty of our country and the hardworking people who keep it green and alive.
If I could give one piece of advice to the youth of Antigua, it would be to get involved in agriculture. It is not only a source of income, but it also offers sustainability for future generations. Agriculture is about more than planting crops or raising livestock, it is about keeping our families, communities, and our nation alive. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity I was given, and if I had the chance to do it again, I would take it a thousand times over.
What excites me most is seeing the next generation’s growing interest in this field. Many young people are already showing passion for agriculture, and if this continues, it could create generational wealth for families and even greater opportunities for Antigua as a whole. Perhaps one day, our farms will be exporting goods to other countries, making our nation a strong contributor to the global agricultural market.
This experience has shaped how I see my future and the future of our country. Agriculture is not just a career. it is a legacy, and I want to be part of ensuring that it thrives for generations to come.
