Antigua and Barbuda’s Agricultural Vision 2030:  A Call for Collective Action by Brent Simon

The Ministry of Agriculture, Land, Fisheries and the Blue Economy has set an ambitious target: for agriculture to contribute 5% to Antigua and Barbuda’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by the year 2030. This goal, outlined by permanent Mr. Walter Christopher/Permanent Secretary is a transformative vision aimed at revitalizing the agricultural sector and securing food sovereignty, economic resilience and environmental sustainability. However, achieving this milestone will require full participation from all stakeholders – farmers, policymakers, private investors and most importantly, the nation’s youth.

Agriculture, is more than just a means of sustenance – it is not only an economic driver that can create jobs, reduce food imports and strengthen rural communities, but it is also the foundation of all cultural expressions” explained Mr. Gregory Bailey/Director of Agriculture.

Today in January of 2025, agricultural contributions to the GDP of Antigua and Barbuda stand at 1.5%. Targeting 5% by 2030, is an ambitious but very achievable goal, and is not out of step with the broader Caribbean context, where agriculture plays an important, though small, role in national economics.

Globally, many nations, especially in Europe and North America, have moved away from agriculture as a significant GDP contributor, however, many Caribbean nations are actively investing in agricultural revitalization programs, aimed at boosting productivity, diversifying crops, and reducing reliance on imports. This is also Antigua and Barbuda’s goal, with a higher emphasis on agriculture for rural development, food security, and exportation opportunities.

Youths are critical to this transformation in agriculture. Their adaptability to technology and innovative thinking, will continue to develop and modernize farming methods, improve yields, and create value added products. By participating in agribusiness, research, and sustainable practices, young people can redefine agriculture as a profitable, forward-driven industry.

The ministry of Agriculture will proactively do its part to engage our youths more effectively. At the Ministry, we will strive to enhance agriculture science programmes/projects in schools and specialized training courses are offered covering various sectors of the industry. The financial institutions, cooperate community and other stakeholders can provide grants, loans, and mentorship for young entrepreneurs. The society on a whole should promote success stories of youths in agriculture to inspire others.

This requires a collective effort from All. Farmers are expected and required to adopt sustainable practices and modern tools. Businesses will need to invest in the sector and provide market access for local produce. The government will ensure that policies support land access, infrastructural and funding development, and consumers MUST support local by buying and using local produce and products. The road to 2030 starts now and by working together, we can achieve this Vision.
