World Egg Day by Shenequa Williams
World Egg Day is celebrated annually on the second Friday of October. This year’s theme, ‘United by Eggs’, celebrates how the egg connects and unifies people from all corners of the globe.
This day was established by the International Egg Commission (IEC) in 1996 to raise awareness about the nutritional value of eggs and their importance in diets worldwide. This celebration not only highlights the versatility and health benefits of eggs but also emphasizes their role in fighting hunger and malnutrition. Countries across the globe, including Antigua and Barbuda, participate in this day to promote the consumption of eggs and support sustainable food systems.
Eggs are one of nature’s most nutritious foods. They are a rich source of high-quality protein, essential vitamins (such as B12, D, A, and riboflavin), minerals like iron and selenium, and healthy fats. Just one egg can provide about 6 grams of protein, making it a powerful dietary addition for people of all ages. Eggs are particularly valuable in regions where access to diverse protein sources may be limited.
Antigua and Barbuda, like many other countries, participate in World Egg Day by raising awareness about the benefits of incorporating eggs into daily diets. Poultry farming, though relatively small for there is room for expansion and improvement, in a micro way contributes to the island’s food security. Locally produced eggs are increasingly recognized for their role in reducing the country’s reliance on imported food products.
Today we are highlighting the importance of supporting local egg producers and encouraging consumers to purchase locally produced eggs, which would help to bolster the economy and provide fresher, higher-quality food to households.
So, this October, whether you’re in Antigua, Barbuda, or anywhere else in the world, consider cracking open an egg and celebrating the many benefits it brings to the table!
