Seminar on Hybrid Maize and Pepper Production for Antigua and Barbuda by Shenequa Williams

From the 12th to the 25th of September, I had the privilege of attending a 14-day seminar on Hybrid Maize and Pepper Production for Antigua and Barbuda held in Changsha, Hunan Province, China.

This impactful seminar was executively organized by Yuan Longping High-tech Agriculture Co., Ltd. and brought together participants from Antigua and Barbuda, to learn the latest in agricultural techniques and innovations. It was an experience I will cherish, not only for the knowledge gained but also for the memorable interactions and cultural exchanges.

The seminar kicked off on Thursday, September 12th, with an opening ceremony at the headquarters of Yuan Longping High-tech Agriculture Co., Ltd.  Dai Ya, Project Manager, officially welcomed us, setting the stage for what would be a thorough and enlightening two weeks. We quickly transitioned into a team-building session led by Zhou Sisi, a Senior Economist, which allowed us to bond with our fellow participants and facilitators. This foundation of camaraderie made the seminar even more enjoyable and effective.

Throughout the 14 days, we attended a series of lectures and practical visits. Lectures covered a wide array of topics, from China’s impressive agricultural reform and opening-up strategies to the specifics of hybrid maize cultivation, sweet corn production techniques, and pepper seed breeding. Renowned experts such as Zhao Zhengwen from the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Miao Wu from Hunan Xiangyan Seed Industry Co., Ltd. ensured that the sessions were rich in content and practical insights.

We also had the opportunity to visit various agricultural sites, including the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Gaoqiao Market, and several cutting-edge agricultural technology companies in Guangzhou. These visits offered us a first-hand look at China’s agricultural innovation and modernization efforts.

While the seminars, lectures, and visits were invaluable, it was the people who made this trip truly special. It would be remiss if I didn’t mention Zilia, Amanda, and Edwina, our translators/guides. Their enthusiasm, helpfulness, and companionship were constant throughout the trip. Whether we were attending lectures, exploring the local markets, or trying out Chinese delicacies, they were always there to lend a hand or offer a smile. They truly made the trip worthwhile.

The entire team, from the Yuan Longping High-tech Agriculture Co., Ltd. staff to the seminar participants, played a vital role in making this seminar a success. Everyone involved brought their unique skills, knowledge, and personalities, which made for a truly collaborative and enriching experience.

Beyond the agricultural knowledge, this trip gave us a window into China’s rich culture and traditions. The warm welcome and hospitality of the people of Changsha and Guangzhou were overwhelming, and the Chinese Calligraphy session left a lasting impression on me. Every interaction was infused with kindness and respect, further solidifying my appreciation for Chinese culture. I can honestly say that I now hold a special place in my heart for China, and I hope to have the opportunity to visit again someday.

As I reflect on the seminar, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to learn and grow alongside professionals in the field. The information shared during the seminar will be invaluable for the agricultural development of Antigua and Barbuda. The knowledge of hybrid maize and pepper production will no doubt contribute to our agricultural sustainability and food security. I look forward to applying what I’ve learned and hope to continue fostering ties between our nations in the field of Agriculture.

To Yuan Longping High-tech Agriculture Co., Ltd., the amazing interns, and all those who made this trip an unforgettable experience—thank you! or as they say in China-Xièxiè nǐ.  I look forward to the possibility of returning to this beautiful country and continuing this journey of learning and cooperation.
