COMMEMORATING WORLD DAY TO COMBAT DESERTIFICATION & DROUGHT by Carol-Faye Bynoe-George
A symbol of commitment to the preservation of our coastal ecosystem was very evident this morning 17th June in the observation of “WORLD DAY TO COMBAT DESERTIFICATION AND DROUGHT” a tree-planting exercise took place at the Dickenson Bay.
The collaborative venture between the Ministry of Agriculture, Sandals Grand Antigua and Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM) as a demonstration of the seriousness for our environment and taking ownership of our responsibilities had brought these three entities to initiate a reforestation project on one of the coastal shores of Antigua and Barbuda.
The trees were donated by the Forestry Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, the continued caretaking of the Malaysian dwarf coconut plants will be the responsibility of the Sandals Grand Antigua while the support and technical mechanism would be given by the PISLM.
As a sign of Sandal’s positive commitment one of the trees was planted by Mr. David Latchimy, General Manager-Sandals Grand Antigua and another by Miss Aliyah Ramdin, Environment, Health and Safety Manager-Sandals Grand Antigua. A total of four coconut trees were planted on this beachfront and similar exercises will done on other coastlines.
The Ministry of Agriculture would like to thank Mr. Nico Bersma, Executive Assistant Manager-Sandal Grand Antigua for his usual zealous assistance, Mr. Latchimy, Miss Ramdin and other supporting staff of Sandals Grand Antigua, the staff of ABS television and PISLM for making this significant event a reality.
HAPPY WORLD DAY TO COMBAT DESERTIFICATION AND DROUGHT!
