WORLD POULTRY DAY 2024 by Carol-Faye Bynoe-George
World Poultry Day celebrated annually on 10th May is aimed at increasing the awareness of how important domestic birds such as chicken, duck, turkey, geese and quail are important as a source of protein and food. They are the most consumed or used for their meat, eggs and feathers. Their contribution towards Food Security and the economy is very significant.
Like every living animal there is always some type of disease(s) that will affect or negatively impact the good health of these birds. Two common diseases are Avian Flu (also known as Bird Flu) and Avian Leukosis. Once not detected early the affected birds would not grow and produce as they should. This can cause serious lost of revenue for the breeder.
Fortunately, there are no reports made of these diseases here. Therefore, it seems safe to assume we were never affected. Especially since “Bird Flu” can be transmitted from bird to human but thus far we have no report of any human contracting that disease.
However, there are precautionary measures in the futuristic plans for the Veterinary and Livestock Division to include surveillance of the poultry population on island. Periodically, random and diagnostic testing will be done. These and more are all in the efforts of securing and safe-guarding our Food source.
