Although history has shown that the first Veterinary faculty began as far back in 1761 in Lyon France, the first World Veterinary Congress was held more than one hundred years later in 1863 by Professor John Gamgee, and the World Veterinary Association started almost a hundred years after in 1959. Celebration of World Veterinary Day officially began twenty-four (24) years ago in 2000.
Worldwide, veterinarians and veterinary associations are celebration under the well earn and deserved theme “Veterinarians are Essential Health Workers”. In 2008, World Veterinary Award was created and the first recipient was Kenya Veterinary Association, however, All veterinarians should be recognized for their professional competencies and be regarded as not only essential but an integral arm of the health system.
This special day is scheduled for every last Saturday in April and gives the opportunity to commemorate the contributions of all Veterinarians, Veterinary Workers and their Associations. Globally, more and more of these healthcare providers are shown the respect and gratitude for the services, labour and love they extend to animals, people and the environment.
