IT’S WAS PUMPKIN LOVE AFFAIR

IT’S A PUMPKIN AFFAIR by Carol-Faye Bynoe-George

Although inclement weather had the third annual “PUMPKIN LOVE AFFAIR” at a late start, the student and teachers of the Glanville Secondary School (GSS) were determined to showcase all the delicious edibles made from mainly PUMPKIN.

Thursday 18th April was not a usual school day for many of the Agricultural Science students and educators.  It was a day full of pumpkin, excitement, hard work and showers of blessing.  Nevertheless, happily the school attendees were in great spirit and were filled with anticipation as they busily arranged their stalls or dodging the rain drops.

The one of the main activities at this fair was the Recipe Competition which was very competitive. Other schools were invited to participate.  Glanville Secondary won with their Pumpkin Cake Pops with Pumpkin sauce, second place went to the Jennings Secondary School Creme de la Cocokin and Sir Novelle Richards Academy’s Pumpkin Creme Pie received third place.

Some of what was offered on the menu were Barbeque Chicken with a Pumpkin Sweet and Sour Sauce, Old Fashioned Pumpkin Soup, Pumpkin Cheese Cake, Pumpkin Chocolate Cookies, Pumpkin Sea Moss and Pumpkin Spice Drink.

“The recipe competition was well but I was disappointed that the pumpkin outfit competition did not because of lack of participation, that category only had one participant. On a positive note, I am happy to say that the public supported by purchasing the prepared meals and other goodies that were available”, Denise Hodge (Head of Agri-science department for GSS) said.

Other activities included Egg cleaning, grading and packaging Competition and a Sweet Potato Eating Contest. The Pumpkin Fair was a fundraiser and a collaboration between the Glanville Secondary School and the Agricultural science Department within the Ministry of Education.
