March Poultry Seminar
The Poultry Seminar held on 28th March was facilitated by Dr. Ibrahim Allaz, veterinary officer within the Ministry of Agriculture’s Veterinary and Livestock Division.
Dr. Allaz focus was mainly on Coccidia and Mycotoxins parasitic and fungi (respectively) invasion in poultry.
Coccidia is a protozoa parasite that destroys the lining of a chicken’s intestines. It causes damaged intestines, resulting in malnutrition. Additionally, he demonstrated the symptoms, diagnosis, ailments and treatments. Further he admonished that in severe cases, the damage caused by the parasite may be irreparable and lead to death. During his dissemination Dr. Allaz further reiterate on prevention through practices such as good management, sanitize the coop/breeder and Outdoor exposure.
Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites of fungi that can cause serous health problems in animals, especially chickens. They are produced by various molds belonging primarily to the species of the Aspergillus, Penicillium and Fusarium genera. Mycotoxins are produced both pre- and post-harvest in crops and other feed and food commodities. Dr. Allaz explained about the many types of Mycotoxins, clinical signs, diagnosis, supportive treatment and treatment.
Poultry farmers are encouraged to attend these sessions for more information will be shared about other diseases that could affect the poultry production.
