St. Mary’s Secondary School First Formers Embark on Educational Adventure at CARDI

The St. Mary’s Secondary School’s first formers recently enjoyed an educational field trip to the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) on January 24th. The focus of the trip was to explore the intriguing world of seeds, germination, and the diverse processes of plant growth. This exercise was conducted by Mr. Junior Orlando Greene, CARDI Representative for Antigua/Barbuda and Montserrat.
At CARDI, students were immersed in the science of seeds and germination, gaining insights into various germination types, being epigeal and hypogeal. The highlight of the outing was the hands-on experience, allowing students to witness seeds in different germination stages and they actively participated in planting corn and pumpkin seeds under expert guidance.
This practical exposure bridged the gap between theoretical and real-world applications while enhancing students’ understanding of science and agriculture. The interactive sessions not only deepened their appreciation for the marvels of nature but also instilled a sense of responsibility and environmental awareness.
The field trip to CARDI left a lasting impact on the first formers, inspiring a passion for sustainable practices and a newfound curiosity about the natural world. As these students return to their classrooms, they bring with them a rich tapestry of knowledge and experiences, thanks to the immersive journey provided by CARDI.
