WORLD AGRICULTURE DAY
This significant day is celebrated on 11th June annually. It was started in Canada by an organization called AGyours Group. Bearing in mind, that “Agriculture is everybody’s concern ranging from the producers to the consumers makes their slogan quite a relevant one “Agriculture belongs to YOU”.
Research showed that the Agricultural sector is approximately 10,000 years old and since back then humans began to domesticate animals and plants. Therefore, the date is one of observance with the aim for us to commemorate this very important sector. It serves as a reminder of where our food comes from.
There are two main divisions of Agriculture; subsistence and commercial farming. Subsistence farming is the practice of growing crops and raising livestock for one’s own needs while commercial farming is produced on a much larger scale for sale.
With modern science and technology, there are more production methods besides traditional practices like the tilling of the soil. Globally, Food Production has been revolutionized by the invention of both hydroponic and aquaponic both of which use water as their base instead of soil.
The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) wishes to salute and thank all of our food producers: farmers and backyard gardeners are very important stakeholders in the fight against hunger, Food Security and Sovereignty.
