ANOTHER THE EUROPEAN UNION AND THE GOVERNMENT OF ANTIGUA & BARBUDA COLLABORATION
The European Union and the Government of Antigua and Barbuda have collaborated for many years on several subjects such as education. During the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing was implemented the EU contacted and suggested the implementation of an outdoor learning space project. The project includes two (2) pilot schools which were the Villa Primary School, and the Liberta Primary School, and will receive three park-style benches, two bins, signage for the schools, and fruit trees.
Part of the project included an environment and greening component, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Barbuda Affairs was approached to assist with the provision of fruit trees to the school.
Team Leader Governance, Security and Human Development European Union Representative, Dr. Florian Luetticken addressed both schools and emphasized the partnership between the European Union and the Government of Antigua. He expressed his gratitude to everyone that played a part in the execution of the project.
Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne was on hand on Thursday for the launch of the project at the Villa Primary school and Mr. Conliffe Phillip, Liaison Officer to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Agriculture, Trade, Immigration and Barbuda Affairs, Hon. Chet Greene represented the Minister at the Liberta Primary School as he was unable to attend.
Director of Agriculture, Mr. Gregory Bailey, was also in attendance at both schools and enforced that an agricultural setting can provide a naturally social environment as a convergent point for all disciplines whether it be the natural or social sciences. Mr. Bailey also emphasized that the Ministry is very pleased to collaborate on such a project.
The Ministry of Agriculture provided leadership in the form of material and technical support for the establishment of the green spaces which was facilitated by Extension Division officers; South-Central District Officer along with Regulatory Officer Mario Beazer assisted the Liberta Primary School which is within their district. District Officer, Victor Harris, and regulatory officer, Kenrick Francis assisted the Villa Primary School.
