Coco Plum
Coco Plum/ Fat pork or Fat poke
Coco plum is a sturdy, evergreen shrub or small tree that grows near tropical beaches. It produces small, round fruits that range in color from pale white and pink to deep purple. Inside the thin skin is a spongy, white pulp with a very mild, lightly sweet flavor and a texture like wet marshmallow fluff.
Coco Plum in Antigua:
● The Sister Island Abundance: While you can spot the black and white varieties around Antigua, the red coco plum variety grows abundantly in Barbuda.
● The Two-in-One Snack: When you eat a coco plum, you get two treats in one. After eating the cottony, marshmallow-like outer fruit, you can crack open the woody seed shell inside. The inner kernel is completely edible and tastes surprisingly like a roasted almond or granola.
● Stews and Jams: Because the fresh fruit has a very delicate, subtle flavor on its own, locals often poke holes in the skin, soak them, and boil them down with brown sugar and spices to make candied “sugar plums,” jellies, and rich fruit preserves.
● Natural Medicine: In traditional Caribbean wellness, different parts of the coco plum tree are used as home remedies. Boiling the bark and leathery leaves into herbal tea creates a strong, natural astringent traditionally used to settle an upset stomach.
The Two Unique Types
Botanists group coco plums into two distinct styles depending on where they grow:
● The Coastal Type: This is the variety you see lining beaches and coastal roads. It grows as a low, sprawling ground cover or short shrub (under 6 feet tall). It has incredible salt tolerance, allowing it to take direct hits from harsh ocean spray without dying.
● The Inland Type: If planted further away from the ocean spray, the coco plum behaves entirely differently. It grows straight up into a multi-trunked bushy tree that can reach 20 to 25 feet tall.
Health Benefits
The Antigua Ministry of Agriculture promotes coco plum as an excellent local health supplement.
● Immune & Bone Support: It is unique because it contains Vitamin K alongside Vitamins A and C. Vitamin K is essential for helping your blood clot properly and keeping bones strong.
● Heavy Antioxidants: The deep purple-skinned varieties are packed with Anthocyanins. This is the exact same natural compound that makes blueberries a superfood. It fights cell damage, supports kidney and gallbladder health, and reduces inflammation.
