International Day for Underwater Cultural Heritage by Shenequa Williams

Every year on August 21st the International Day for Underwater Cultural Heritage is celebrated to highlight the importance of protecting the history and cultural treasures found beneath our oceans, seas and other waterways.

Underwater Cultural Heritage includes shipwrecks, ancient settlements, artefacts and other remains that tell stories about the people, communities and civilizations that came before us. These sites provide valuable insight into our shared history and connection to the sea.

As we celebrate this day, we are reminded of the need to protect and preserve these underwater treasures for future generations. Our waters hold stories worth discovering, understanding and protecting.
