International Day of Seeds is celebrated globally on April 26th of each year. The purpose of this unique day is to increase public awareness of the value of seeds in agriculture, biodiversity, and food security. Since its founding in 2000 by the nonprofit organisation “Seed Savers Exchange,” the day has received international recognition, with organisations, farmers, and people taking part in a variety of activities to celebrate the importance of seeds.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The theme for International Day of Seeds 2024 is \u201cPreserving Indigenous Seed Varieties.\u201d This theme highlights the crucial role that indigenous seeds play in maintaining biodiversity, adapting to climate change, and ensuring food sovereignty.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Indigenous seeds, cultivated and passed down through generations, embody resilience, genetic diversity, and adaptability to local environments. However, these traditional seed varieties are increasingly threatened by industrial agriculture, seed patents, and monoculture farming practices.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
The purpose of this year’s festivities is to increase public awareness on the value of protecting and advancing native seed varieties. We can harness the power of different seeds to construct resilient agricultural systems and lessen the problems caused by climate change and food insecurity by acknowledging the skillset and practices of indigenous populations.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

For the benefits of present and future generations, the International Day of Seeds 2024 serves as a call to action for governments, farmers, seed savers, and consumers to prioritise the conservation and sustainable use of indigenous seeds. Together, let’s pay tribute to the modest seed, which is the source of our sustenance and the key to our survival.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
