Yesterday 21<\/span>st<\/span><\/span>\u00a0March was recognized as \u201c<\/span><\/span>International Day of Forests\u201d<\/span><\/span>under the theme \u201c<\/span><\/span>Forest and Health<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0In keeping with the theme and celebrations of this special day, the Forestry Unit held a hike and tree planting event in the Body Pond area.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Their invited guests were M<\/span>is<\/span>s Sandra Joseph, Permanent\u00a0<\/span>Secretary,<\/span>\u00a0and other staff members from<\/span>\u00a0several sections within<\/span>\u00a0the Ministry of Agriculture<\/span>\u00a0(MOA)<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Special invitees<\/span>were\u00a0<\/span>education officers<\/span> from CARDI, ABS, the Ministry of Education (MOE)<\/span>,<\/span> Primary\/Secondary<\/span> teachers, students<\/span>, and\u00a0 the Registrar and staff members of the Antigua Civil Registry.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The MOA staff were introduced while on the bus while enroute by Camellia Tonge, Forestry Assistant.\u00a0 At the location everyone was addressed by\u00a0 Adriel Thibou, Senior Forestry Offic<\/span>e<\/span>r and by Tonge<\/span>.<\/span>It was decided that the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201cByam Hill\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0area would b<\/span>e<\/span>utiliz<\/span>e<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0for the \u201ctree planting\u201d exercise but in two different sections.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The first section was allotted to the MOE, officers, teachers, and students<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>They were given twenty-five mango seedlings for their area while the remaining participants took an intense climb to the top of the hill to an area where seventy-five coconut trees were planted. In less than an hour one hundred trees were planted<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>These plants will be taken\u00a0<\/span>care of<\/span>\u00a0by the forestry staff. Two of the species were chosen primarily because of the\u00a0<\/span>mutualistic<\/span>\u00a0relationships they share with bats and other wildlife in the area.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

2023, has already proven to be\u00a0<\/span>a very active<\/span>\u00a0year for the Forestry Unit and the Ministry of Agriculture with many more activities in the pipeline for the upcoming months.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
