Agriculture in Antigua and Barbuda faces severe environmental, economic, and structural hurdles that limit local food production and drive a heavy reliance on food imports.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Major Challenges<\/div>\n
Farmers in Antigua and Barbuda, often endure hardships in farming such as:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
1. Water Scarcity and Drought: Antigua is highly prone to droughts. Because natural rainfall is unpredictable and often insufficient, farmers rely heavily on expensive trucked water or Purified seawater. Over time, using Purified seawater for irrigation can damage soil health, wash away nutrients, and contribute to land degradation.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

2. Praedial Larceny (theft): Crop and livestock theft is a persistent and discouraging problem for local growers, reducing their willingness to expand operations.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
3. Insufficient Infrastructure and Storage: Limited post-harvest storage facilities, cold-chain logistics, and packing infrastructure lead to food waste and lower market coordination.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
4. High Input and Energy Costs: Farmers face steep operating costs for electricity, irrigation systems, animal feed, and planting materials, making it difficult to turn a consistent profit.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
5. Land Loss and Dwindling Farmland: Rapid commercial and tourism-related development creates competing demands for land, gradually shrinking available agricultural space.<\/div>\n
However, despite those challenges, farmers still produce under conditions and ensure that they produce the best quality produce for consumers.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
How is the Government and Ministries are currently addressing these major challenges<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
The Government of Antigua and Barbuda is actively deploying targeted interventions to reduce overhead costs, optimize land use, modernize infrastructure, and enhance security for registered farmers nationwide<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
1. Water Management & Utility and Input Cost Reduction: The Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and the Blue Economy is constructing a network of new dams to secure a clean, reliable, and sufficient rainwater supply, with the partnership of FAO and the Department of Environment installed reverse osmosis (RO) plants to systematically lowering reliance on purified seaw<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
2. The Ministry has successfully negotiated with the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) for reductions in the high cost of utilities for registered agricultural operations. Registered farmers are being provided with vouchers for essential inputs including planting materials, fertilizers, and animal feed, redeemable through local agricultural enterprises like the Central Marketing Corporation (CMC).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

3. Land Optimization & Infrastructure Protection: The Government has newly acquired heavy-duty equipment and is facilitating the clearing and constructing of access roads to farming zones in collaboration with other Government Ministries.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
4. To mitigate storage challenges, the Government has implemented a newly acquired, dedicated storage and distribution facility located in Cassada Gardens.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
5. Tackle Theft (Praedial Larceny): The Ministry is actively revising the formal praedial larceny legislation, while encouraging all active growers to secure their properties, report any abnormal activities, complete their mandatory farm registration for legal protection and other benefits.<\/div>\n
