The Little Green Tree of the Vegetable World!<\/div>\n
It looks like a tiny green tree, but Broccoli is actually a cluster of unopened flower buds, and that is just one of the fascinating things about this nutritious vegetable! Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) belongs to the Brassicaceae family, alongside cabbage, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts and several other familiar vegetables.<\/div>\n
More than just the “green stuff”<\/div>\n
When we eat broccoli, we are mainly eating immature flower buds and their tender stems. If left to mature, those tiny buds would eventually open into flowers. That means the familiar broccoli head sitting on your dinner plate is actually a collection of flower buds waiting for their moment to bloom!<\/div>\n
Broccoli has a family connection<\/div>\n
Here’s a fun agricultural fact: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale and Brussels sprouts are all forms of the same species, Brassica oleracea. Through generations of selection and cultivation, farmers developed different characteristics from this species, resulting in the variety of vegetables we know today.<\/div>\n
So when you eat broccoli, you’re eating a crop with some very interesting family connections!<\/div>\n
Where did broccoli come from?<\/div>\n
Broccoli has its roots in the Mediterranean region, particularly in the areas around Italy and Greece, where wild cabbage forms were cultivated and developed over time. Today, broccoli is grown in many parts of the world.<\/div>\n
Not all broccoli is green!<\/div>\n

Can broccoli grow in the tropics?<\/div>\n
Broccoli is generally associated with cooler growing conditions, and temperature can have a major influence on the formation and quality of its edible heads. However, some cultivars can be grown in warmer and subtropical conditions, meaning variety selection and appropriate production practices are particularly important when growing broccoli in warmer climates.<\/div>\n
For local farmers, understanding the crop’s growing requirements is essential when considering broccoli production.<\/div>\n
From seed to harvest<\/div>\n
