If you’ve ever heard someone in the Caribbean say \u201cCrayfish\u201d or \u201cCrawfish,\u201d you may have wondered exactly what animal they mean.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Here’s the interesting part:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
We have Spiny Lobster right here in Antigua and Barbuda!<\/div>\n
And depending on where you are, this lobster may also be called Crawfish or Crayfish.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
So, is a Crayfish the same thing as a Lobster?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Not necessarily!<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

What is a Crayfish?<\/div>\n
In many parts of the world, the word Crayfish refers to a small, lobster-like crustacean that lives primarily in freshwater.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Freshwater Crayfish generally have:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u25cf freshwater habitats<\/div>\n
\u25cf hard outer shells<\/div>\n
\u25cf prominent claws<\/div>\n
\u25cf several pairs of walking legs<\/div>\n
\u25cf segmented bodies and tails<\/div>\n
They are related to lobsters, but they are not the same as Marine Lobsters.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

But here’s the catch\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u201cCrayfish\u201d is a common name, and common names can vary from place to place.<\/div>\n
NOAA Fisheries explains that \u201ccrayfish\u201d and \u201ccrawfish\u201d can refer both to freshwater crayfish and to saltwater spiny lobsters, depending on regional usage.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

What is a Lobster?<\/div>\n
A Lobster is a marine crustacean that lives in the ocean. Lobsters belong to several different groups, but they are generally recognized by their hard outer shells, segmented bodies, multiple pairs of walking legs and long antennae.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
There are different types of lobsters, including Clawed Lobsters and Spiny Lobsters.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Clawed Lobsters, such as the American Lobster have large front claws used for catching food and defence.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Spiny lobsters, including the Caribbean Spiny Lobster found in Antigua and Barbuda do not have large front claws. Instead, they have prominent spines and long antennae.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
The word \u201cLobster\u201d doesn’t always mean the lobster with the big claws you see in pictures!<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Our Caribbean Spiny Lobster (Panulirus argus) is a lobster too, it just belongs to a different group.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This is where our local story gets interesting.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Caribbean Spiny Lobster (Panulirus argus) is found throughout the Caribbean, including Antigua and Barbuda.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

FAO’s Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission specifically lists a Spiny Lobster, Antigua fishery, with Panulirus argus identified as the target species.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Caribbean Spiny Lobster is also commonly known as:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u25cf rock lobster<\/div>\n

NOAA lists crawfish and rock lobster among its common names.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

So when you hear \u201ccrayfish\u201d or \u201ccrawfish\u201d in a Caribbean context, the person may actually be talking about a spiny lobster.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

So how do you tell them apart?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Crayfish<\/div>\n
Lobster<\/div>\n
Usually lives in freshwater<\/div>\n
Lives in marine\/saltwater<\/div>\n
Generally smaller<\/div>\n
Generally larger<\/div>\n
Usually has prominent claws<\/div>\n
Depends on the type<\/div>\n
Found in rivers, streams, lakes and ponds<\/div>\n
Found in seas and oceans<\/div>\n
Lobster-like body<\/div>\n
Hard shell, segmented body and long antennae<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Why does this matter to Antigua and Barbuda?<\/div>\n
The Caribbean Spiny Lobster isn’t just an interesting marine animal.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
It is also part of the Fisheries resources of Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Caribbean.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
FAO reports that thousands of fishers across the Caribbean depend on the Spiny Lobster fishery for income and food security, while regional fisheries organizations continue working on science-based management and sustainable use of the resource.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
