The spirit of agriculture, creativity, and youth engagement was on full display as the Interschool Gardening Competition, hosted by the Ministry of Education, Antigua and Barbuda, officially came to a close yesterday across the twin-island state, marking the end of an inspiring period of innovation and environmental stewardship among the nation\u2019s students.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The competition brought together pre-schools, primary schools, and secondary schools from across the twin-island state, each showcasing their unique approach to gardening, sustainability, and design. Over the past weeks, campuses were transformed into vibrant green spaces, reflecting not only agricultural practices but also imagination, teamwork, and a deep appreciation for the environment.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Judging was conducted by a panel of experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Lands & the Blue Economy, alongside other key external stakeholders. These judges visited each participating institution, carefully evaluating the gardens based on criteria such as creativity, sustainability, layout, plant diversity, and alignment with the competition\u2019s theme.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

One of the most remarkable aspects of this year\u2019s competition was the innovation displayed by each school. Every garden told a story\u2014whether through creative layouts, thematic designs, or the introduction of new elements such as recycled materials, irrigation systems, or culturally inspired planting styles. Primary and secondary schools, on the other hand, demonstrated a more advanced understanding of agricultural practices. Speaking on the importance of the initiative, Joshua Henderson student from Jennings Secondary School-2025 MOA Intern emphasized the deeper value of the competition, stating, \u201cAgriculture is not just about getting your hands dirty, but learning about where food comes from and understanding its importance in our daily lives.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Adding to the uniqueness of the competition, several schools introduced creative names for their gardens, aligning closely with the overall theme. These names not only reflected the identity of each school but also reinforced the purpose and message behind their designs.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A representative from one of the participating secondary schools also noted, \u201cThis competition pushed us to think beyond the classroom. We learned teamwork, responsibility, and how agriculture can be both innovative and impactful.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
