It was all aboard at 9 a.m. today for interns in the Ministry of Agriculture\u2019s \u201cGet Your Sea Legs\u201d marine experience, part of the summer internship program aimed at exposing youth to real-world practices in small-scale fisheries.<\/p>\n

Before setting sail, the group met seasoned fish pot builders Captain Smooth and Captain Flex, both gave lively on-site demos on pot construction and their roles in sustainable fishing. Shortly after, the Antigua and Barbuda Defense Force Coast Guard\u2019s interceptor vessel arrived, and both the Coast Guard and the Henry\u2019s fishing crew set off with their respective interns aboard.<\/p>\n

The two vessels beelined 8 miles northwest of Antigua, where a pair of fish pots were deployed. Interns then tried their hand at line fishing\u2014with limited success. Only one small fish was caught during the session, but spirits remained high. Later, when the pots were retrieved, the group examined a modest catch: one red hind and two butterfish.<\/p>\n

By 2 p.m., the vessels returned to dock where the interns cleaned, seasoned, and fried their catch\u2014giving everyone a true sea-to-table experience. Though a few battled seasickness along the way, all reported enjoying the hands-on exposure, and organizers hope at least one intern now sees a future in some aspect of the marine sector.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Agriculture extends special thanks to Captain Euton Henry jr. and the Antigua and Barbuda Defense Force Coast Guard for their vital support and expertise during this immersive experience.<\/p>\n
