Caribbean Biodiversity Fund Approves US$12 Million for Ecosystem-based Adaptation to
\nClimate Change in 10 Caribbean Countries<\/p>\n
Caribbean Biodiversity Fund, November 5, 2019 \u2013 The Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF)
\ncongratulates 11 organizations for their successful funding applications made under the CBF
\nEcosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) Facility\u2019s 1st Call for Proposals. Grants totalling US$12
\nMillion and ranging in size from US$ 260,000 to US$2 million will be provided for the
\nimplementation of EbA solutions within the marine and coastal zones of 10 Caribbean
\ncountries. \u201cEbA has been recognized to be among the most cost-effective approaches in
\naddressing climate risk\u201d shared Karim ould Chih, Chairman of the EbA Facility Committee which
\nhas oversight responsibility for the Facility. \u201cThe EbA Committee is extremely pleased with the
\ntransparent and effective process employed in the identification and selection of projects\u201d he
\nadded. The EbA approach employs the use of biodiversity and ecosystem services as part of an
\noverall adaptation strategy to help people in adapting to the adverse effects of climate change
\n\u201cWe had a tremendous response to our first Call for Proposals resulting in a very competitive
\nprocess\u201d reflected Joth Singh, EbA Facility Programme Manager. \u201cThe 11 projects to be funded
\nin the insular Caribbean will provide a range of actions including protected areas\u2019 management,
\nrestoration and rehabilitation of ecosystems, reduction of land-based stressors, measures to
\nreduce physical damage and pressures on ecosystems, installation of artificial reefs and hybrid
\nsolutions relevant to the EbA approach\u201d Singh added. The projects will be collectively
\nimplemented in Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti,
\nJamaica, Saint Lucia, St Vincent & the Grenadines and Trinidad & Tobago.
\nThe successful lead agencies are (in alphabetical order): Centro Agron\u00f3mico Tropical de
\nInvestigaci\u00f3n y Ense\u00f1anza, Dominican Institute for Integrated Development, Fauna & Flora
\nInternational, Fundaci\u00f3n Grupo Puntacana, Fundaci\u00f3n REDDOM Rural Economic Development
\nDominicana, Grenada Community Development Agency, Inter-American Institute for
\nCooperation On Agriculture, J\/P Haitian Relief Organization, Mona GeoInformatics Institute –
\nUniversity of the West Indies, Saint Lucia National Trust, and the University of the West Indies –
\nCentre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies. CBF Chief Executive Officer,
\nYabanex Batista, was delighted on completing the selection process. \u201cWe expect that
\nagreements with the selected organizations will be signed in November of this year leading to
\nfunds being disbursed soon thereafter\u201d expressed Batista.
\nThe EbA Facility aims to issue a second call for proposals in February 2020. The Facility\u2019s
\nresources are a contribution of the German Federal Ministry of Environment\u2019s International
\nClimate Initiative through KfW, the German Development Bank.
